Midwifery Care

What is a midwife?

Midwifery is based on a belief that birth is a normal life event and strives to partner with women through their childbearing years. Midwives are trained professionals that respect every woman's individualism and uniqueness. Midwives are experts in health and wellness offering counseling and education to grow healthy babies and better the chance at an uncomplicated and natural birth. They work with the family to recognize needs both physical and emotional. They understand their limits and will refer to other health care providers as necessary.

Is a midwife safe?

Statistical data shows that planned out of hospital births are actually safer for low-risk mothers than the hospital. Fewer interventions take place resulting in fewer complications and less likelihood that a cascade of problems will result. It is important to remember that even with midwives there are many different kinds and the practices and protocols of one may be very different than the protocols of another. It is the responsibility of the parents to do their research and make sure that they are comfortable with the kind of care their midwife provides.

A midwife cannot guarantee you the perfect birth. As with any life situation, circumstances can change quickly, but when considering birth it is important to understand that birth is natural and inherently safe and interference with the birth process is risky to both mother and baby.

What are some of the benefits of hiring a midwife?

For most birthing women that fall in the low-risk category, choosing a homebirth midwife is beneficial for many reasons. Midwives offer personal attention and compassion that is not routinely found among obstetricians. Your medical history and personal concerns are discussed at length and midwives will take the time to make sure that all of your concerns have been addressed.

With a midwife you will receive continuity of care, meaning you will be cared for consistently by the same person. This is very comforting for most mothers and helpful in that your care provider knows you and has developed a relationship with you over time. It is possible, however, that your midwife may have several different assistants and there is a possibility of the element of surprise when it comes to who is actually available at the time of your birth.

It is of extreme importance to study topics pertaining to birth, know what you want out of your birth experience. Should you choose to have your birth attended by a midwife, do your research and choose someone who recognizes your wants and needs and is able to accommodate you according to your desires.

"Birth is not about making babies. Birth is about making mothers- Strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." - Barbara Katz-Rothman
